Inspector of Foods.
The ground thus described being in my possession; and, as the property included the valuables, and the various shops had actually been all let by anticipation of completion. I immediately entered into a contract with a native Builder to finish the Buildings.
My operations were, however, impeded in consequence of the Government leaving in the meantime a Police Station advanced building opposite - the walls of which were discovered to be an encroachment on the line laid down - so that in order to preserve it at the breadth of 50 feet, it became necessary either to remove further back the walls of the Police office or of my buildings; and I was requested by Mr Tarrant, who was then Law Inspector (and who is at present in the Colony - to whom I beg reference) to suspend my operations until this matter should be determined. It was at length resolved that my walls must give place to those of the Government.
This resolution was definitely conveyed to me in the following official letter from the Land Officer, to which I beg specially to direct His Excellency's attention.
